The hike to Fancy Lake, Mulhall Lakes and Cleveland Lake in the Holy Cross Wilderness in the White River National Forest is breathtaking. It's not a terribly difficult hike, though it can take a long time to complete just under 13 miles as there is so much to see. The views are absolutely amazing. The weather was not the best but the clouds brought out dramatic shadows on the granite and the lakes, though I would still love to see this area on a clear day.
The abandoned mining town of Holy Cross City is along the route. This is in mining country, so there are a number of mine shafts and abandoned mining equipment - which can be dangerous, but very interesting from a safe distance. The incline to Fancy Lake is relatively gentle, tough there are couple of quick elevation gain spots along the trail. Once at Fancy Lake most of the time is spent above 11,000 feet, right at tree line, which makes this trail very interesting. The weather started out with clear blue skies and random could here and there. By the end of the day, it rained for the last hour on the trail. Despite the rain this is definitely a "do again" trail. It's beautiful out there. Checkout my GPS tracks here.
